Quadrille Assembly. — The sixth and Inst assembly of the season will take place in the Music Hali to-morrow evening. Tobacco.—Those of mw readers who purpose sowing tobacco seed this season, will be glad to learn that they can be supplied on application to this office. A letter, with directions on the subject, appears in this morning’s issue. Library Donations. —We observe that the Provincial Council, Auckland, has voled £l5O, towards the Gisborne Library. The Council of Hawke’s Bay has also followed suit anil granted £1 Oil to the Mechanics Institute, conditionally on the yearly subscriptions being reduced from 21s to 10s 6d, which has been done. Gisborne Rifle Volunteers. — The usual monthly parade of this corps took place on Friday last, under the command of

Lieutenant Daly. There was a tolerable muster, and the routine evolutions were gone through. A private meeting of members took

place afterwards, at which some business was transacted relative to the election of a SubLieutenant; but, we understand, nothing

definite was arrived at. Dramatic Club.—The members of the Gisborne Dramatic Club held a meeting on Saturday evening last, at which some few alterations in the management were made. Mr. Bettington was elected Stage Manager, pro tern, in the place of Mr. Berry, who will be absent from the township, for a short, time ; Mr. A. Taylor, was elected Secretary and Treasurer, vice Mr. Ateherley resigned. It was also decided to give another entertainment jn about three weeks hence. Earthquake.—A prolonged shock of earth quake was experienced on Monday morning last, short la yft.er 4 o’clock. It. seems to have been pretty generally felt over the Bay, and was very lengthy in its duration. A long wave-like motion, seemingly from N.E. to S.W., displaced various articles in houses, and emptied water and other vessels of their contents. It was the most- severe shock that has visited this district for some years. The weather at the time was very warm and cloudy. New Zealand Hand Book.—We see by our exchanges that an editorial copy of this work has been seut to the Aew Zealand Times, solus, for review. It has not yet transpired whether other papers have been so furnished, or if it is the intention of the Government to extend the usual courtesies with respect to a work which, we should have thought, required the earliest and fullest amount of publicity possible.

Stock and Station Agent.—Mr. Miller, whoso reputation as a man of business has often reached us from Hawke's Bay, arrived by the last trip of the Pretty Jane from Napier. The weather and the state of our roads have prevented him from being able to give as good a report of the district as he might otherwise have done. We trust, nevertheless, that his visit will bear to us some of the fruit he lias been the means of importing to Hawke’s Bay. Mr. Miller’s business advertisement appears elsewhere. Caution.-Yesterday morning, in the R M.’s Court, a resident in Gisborne was fined £3 for insulting and resisting the police in the execution of their duty, on Monday evening last. It appears that the Secretary of the Ruud Board had requested the assistance of the police in preventing vehicles and horses being taken on to the footpaths in the town ; and, in fuifiment of that duly, they met with some opposition on the occasion referred to. We trust this will be a warning to all who, from an indifferent regard to consequences, treat these matters with contempt. A large outlay is being made in making our causeways eon.fortable for pedestrians ; and it is'impossible that the Road Board can submit to a wilful destruction of its property. They hare-authority for prosecuting any- person who does so, independently of any infringement of the police laws ; and we hope that, all future complaints will be followed up with rigor. The Road Board would do well to make this matter officially public. We trust the new Chairman of that body will not drop down to the level of his predecessor, aud accuse us of touting for au advertisement.
