WAIROA.

(ebom oub own OOBBESIONDENT.) July 24. The only news of any importance I have to chronicle is a scare the natives about here got the other day concerning Te Kooti. A report came down from Uriwera that this amiable savage had turned up at Ruatahuna, in some incredible manner, known only to themselves, every native on the river became possessed of this information, Up to Te Reinga the news rushed with the rapidity of wildfire, and the natives engaged there in road works speedily made tracks for tho inner settlements. Of course it was all a yarn got up for the occasion, the only result being some extra work for the telegraphic operator in the shape of messages. The originators of these false alarms should bo severely punished; one example would, I believe, put a stop to them. Another item of news, also native, is that a circular is going about tjiis district, pitching into the present Government and praying for a change in the Ministry, this petition has been, it is said, pretty generally signed in the Wairoa and Mahia by the maoris, and is now supposed to be going the rounds in your neighbourhood. Probably, however, you know more about this matter than I do, my information is derivedat second-hand from native sources, who do nof appear to have a thorough acquaintance with the subject themselves. Henare Matua, of intriguing notoriet-Yifi supposed to be at the bottom of th’'' of course European advisers.
