Star of the South left Lyttelton at 4.30 p.m. on Monday for Wellington. Auckland papers announce the recent arrival there of two ships, immigrant laden—the Queen of Nations and the James Wishart. These bring an accession to the population of some 630 souls. Thb A.S.P. Co.’s new steamer Southern Cross under the command of Captain Little arrived in the Bay st 9 o’clock yesterday morning. She is a fine looking boat, and report. says she is an acquisition to the Company. We take the following description of her from a contemporary : —** The fine new screw steamer Southern Cross, built by Mr. Joseph Eltrington, Stone Quay, South Shields, for the New Zealand and Australian trade. She measures 140 feet in length, 23 feet in breadth, and 9 feet in depth, and is propelled by a pair of compound surface condensing engines of 50 horse-power nominal, and 200 horse-power effective. The cylinders measure 181 inches arid 36 inches respectively, with 24-ini-h stroke; a id the engines, which are well finished, are fitted with all the modern improvements for economising foci. The engines were bil'lt by Messrs. Pattison and Atkinson, Mushroom, Newcastle.
