(ORIGINAL.) As wr jotimey through life, the good and the bad, Of’t follow each other so fast; We scantily get used to one state of life, Before the scene’s changed, and ’tis past. So there's only one rule to keep away care, And I’ve found it a golden plan ; Never to stop and fret by the way, O'er a thing I can’t help, or one that I can. CHORUS. This motto of mine, it will never deceive, And when you’re in trouble there’s no better plan ; If you can’t set it right, why then never grieve O'er a thing you can’t help, or one that you can. Mind, I do not advise you to never take heed, And just let things go as they may ; For that is but folly, and will never succeed, And is not what my precept doth say. When things they go wrong, why then do your best, To set them to rights, like a man ; And if you can’t bettor them-—then never fret O’er a thing yon can't help, or one that you can. CHORUS. I often have found that I’ve made a mistake, And that all things are not whnt they seem ; But because fellow man has proved false to me, A rogue I’ll not every man deem. Trusting to man, is like plucking a rose, (In my hand many a thome has ran) But we must*trust them sometimes, —so I’ll never grieve O’er a thing 1 can’t help, or one that I can. CHORUS.
