A deputation from the Agricultural Society at Melbourne waited on the Chief Secretary, and asked him to prohibit the importation of cattle from New Zealand, or remove the prohibition as regards Europe altogether. Mr. Dornwell, a gentleman ever forward in the prosecution of local industries in this province, has exhibited to us a splendid sample of tobacco leaf grown by him upon his property at the Three Kings. The leaves shown to us measured inlength 2| feet, and in breadth 2 feet, and the specimen is every respect a perfect leaf. Of this sample he has three acres under growth, which will average li tons to the acre. The growth of tobacco promises to be an important industry in this province. In the Wairoa, Papakura, and Drury districts there are about 25 acres under cultivation, but none of it, we believe, approaches in excellence of growth that produced on Mr. Dornwell’s farm.— Cross. The Napier Telegraph is glad to report that A. M‘Lean,”Esq., of the Tuki Tuki, has succeeded in securing for that province, one of the most valuable racing sires procurable in Victoria. For some time past, Mr. M'Lean’s friends in Melbourne have been endeavouring to purchase to his order, a horse that would thoroughly meet the requirement of Hawke’s Bay. Kingfisher was bred by J- Gilbert, Esq., of South Australia. He is six years old, by Skyscraper out of Remnant, by Fisherman, out or Henrietta (imported), by Harkaway out of Remnant, bv Picton. Skyscraper out of Wilton (imported), out of Lady Godiva by Hercules. He is described as one of the most powerful throtighbred horses in Victoria.
