NAPIER RACE MEETING.
FIRST DAY. The Napier Races are reported by the Hawke's Bay Herald to have been a success. Marquis, the invincible of Poverty Bay, seems not to have shown to the front in a single race. Captain Richardson occupied the judge's seat, and his fiat gave universal satisfaction. Mr. G. Peacock, as starter, and Messrs. Danvers and Lopdell, ns clerks of the course, also fulfilled their duties in a manner leaving nothing to be desired, and there is no doubt that the success of the meeting is in a great degree due to the exertions of these gentlemen and of the stewards, who spared no time or trouble in the matter. From 800 to 1,000 people were present, the grand-stand being well patronised. The following is a detailed account of the racing : — Maiden Plate—so sovs.; added to a sweepstakes of 5 sovs. ; weights for age ; distance, 1| miles ; open to all horses that have never won an advertised stake exceeding £2O.
