The opening competition at the wool sales has been well maintained. Greasy descriptions are eagerly sought for. It has been determined to hold a series of five sales throughout the year. The corn market is flat; wheat supplies abundant. Arrived : Wild Duck, from New Zealand. The death is announced of Shirley Brooks, the celebrated author, and editor of Punch. Thomas Binney, the late pastor of Weighhouse Chapel, has died at the age of 67. An unofficial report has reached the Admiralty, stating that a battle took place on January 31 at Acromboo, lasting twelve hours. The Ashantees lost heavily. The British loss was also severe; several officers were wounded. General Wolseley was 100 miles from Codmassie, waiting for reinforcements. The Marquis of Westminster has been raised to a dukedom. A despatch has been received from General Wolseley, dated Coomassie, February 5, stating that he had reached there the previous day after five days hard fighting, during which the troops behaved admirably. The casualties of the British troops were under 300 killed and wounded. The King, left the town, but is located close by, and has promised to visit Coomassie that day to sign a treaty of peace. General Wolseley hoped to commence a return march to the coast the next clay.
