General Assembly. — The General Assembly has been further prorogued to the 20 April. Art Union. —We are requested to draw attention to the Art Union, which is to take place at Greetle’s Auction Mart to-night, at 7.30 p.m. Captain Ricjiabdson.—We learn that the numerous friends of this officer have decided on entertaining him at a public dinner or supper on Monday evening next prior to his departure for the Wairoa. We would propose that it should be fixed at such a scale as to induce a monster gathering to do honor to the occasion. Bonus. — A late Government Gazette announces that a bonus of sixpence a gallon will be paid by the colony, on the production of kerosine in quantities of not less than 10,000 gallons at a time, and not exceeding 50,000 gallons in the whole. The kerosine must be of a quality approved of by the Government, and to be sold at a fair average market price. The bonus must be claimed before the 31st December 1874. Districts Under the Native Lands Act 1873. —A proclamation by the Government appears in the Government Gazette defining the boundaries of certain districts under the Native Land Act. The Hawke’s Bay district, in which Poverty Bay is included, is described as follow :—“ Bounded towards the North and East by the sea from Cape .Runaway to the Southern boundary of the Province of Hawke’s Bay ; thence towards the South-west by a right line to the southwestern corner of the Bay of Plenty District; thence towards the North and West by the boundaries of the Bay of Plenty and Opotiki Districts to the commencing point; together with the adjacent islands.” Francis Dart Fenton, Esquire, has been re-appointed Chief Judge, and Frederick Edward Maning, John Rogan, Thomas Henry Smith, and Henry Alfred Horne Munro, Esquires have been re-appointed Judges of the Native Land Court. Samuel Locke, Esquire has been gazetted District Officer under the Act for the district of Hawke’s Hay. Cavalby Repeesentative.—We learn with regret that Mr. *R. Thelwall is disqualified by the handicapping process of the Government .Regulations from contesting for the honor of the Cavalry belt at the annual contest at Napier, as a Government representative. The six Cavalry representatives for the Colony are :—

It appears that the Terry Rifle is considered to be an inferior weapon to the Snider, and in the three ranges fired for the choice of representatives an aggregate handicap of 13 points is tacked on to the Terry scores, which brings them to the front of the Sniders. Thus, without these points, Mr. Thelwall would have been fourth in the Snider rank. Mr. Thelwall can, however, contest for the belt, by going to Napier at his own expense, as an extra representative. But what seems strange is the fact that, although the Government allow the Terry arm to be used in the preliminary contests, they render it imperative that competitors must fire for the belt with the Snider weapon. The same objection applies to the infantry, and is, we think, extremely unsatisfactory.
