We (Hawke's Bay Herald) learn that Archibald Ferguson, of Wairoa, who was lately sentenced two years’ imprisonment for pig-stealing, has escaped from the prison-yard at Clyde, whilst at exercise, getting away into the scrub. Notwithstanding the active exertions of Constable McQuireand the Armed Constabulary at Wairoa, no traces of the prisoner could be discovered. The following is the first verse of the new “ Brokers’ Anthem,” composed for Wall-street. It is applicable elsewhere, and is quite comprehensive enough to dispense with the entire production : “ Teach me a counterfeit to know, and bargains good to see, for quarters I to others show, show fifty cents to me.” The New Zealand Church News says —— That the Venerable Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge has made a grant of £509 towards the erection of ten new churches in the Diocese of Waiapu.
