ITEMS FROM SOUTHERN EXCHANGES.

Fifteen black swans have been lately seen on the lagoon between Napier and the toll-gate. A splendid brown trout, weighing 9 lbs., taken from a pool in the river Matai, near Nelson, was among the viands on the table at the lute dinner there to the Premier. The police of Auckland have subscribed the sum of £l3 9s fid towards the erection of a monument in memory of the late St. John Brannigan, Esq. The Paterson brought up from Lyttelton, a splendid shorthorn bull, one of Page’s celebrated shorthorn breed. The animal is from the same stock as the cattle purchased at such high rates by Mr. G. Hunter and other Wellington settlers who visited the last Canterbury Agricultural Show, and will be placed upon Colonel Whitmore’s property at Hawke’s Bay. It is stated that Mr. Robert Graham has disposed of the two prize sheep—ram and attracted so much favorable attention at the recent annual sheep fair. The price obtained is £l2O, They go to improve the !>reed on Mr. Hurst’s farm at the Lake. If plenty of water and feed, combined with •cure, are essential for sheep, some prize lambs -ought to be looked for from this quarter next year. The wools from this district have invariably secured first-class prices, and there is in this district a small flock of Mr. Graham’s —originally imported Leiccsters —that few, if any, in this province could surpass.
