The Standard. (PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY, AND SATURDAY.)

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1874.

“ We shall sell to no man justice or right: We shall deny to no man justice or right: We shall defer to no man justice or right.”

It is a “ consummation devoutly to be wished,” that the visit of Colonel Moule to Poverty Bay will result in tlioclean sweeping away of some of the evils connected with the Administration of Justice in Gisborne, which, as they now exist, are a scandal to the Government, and a reproach to the community. Notably, we refer again to the condition of the Lock-up, as it is called, and the system under which our police force is supplied. Colonel Moule, it gives us great satisfaction

to say, has given peremptory orders that the happv-family expedient at present in fashion of allowing prisoners to be billetted with the police in their private quarters, shall be discontinued, and that under no circumstances must it again be permitted. We have not heard if any arrangements have been made in the event of the demand outrunning the supply, so that it is not at all certain that we have seen the last of the pantomimic phase of this question. We have confidence, however, in Captain Richardson, who has been instructed to move in this matter with the Superintendent, that he will so forcibly represent the condition of things as to cause immediate action being taken by the Provincial Government.
