“ We shall -sell to no man justice or right: .We shall deny to no man justice or right: We shall defer to no man justice or right.”

School Meeting. — The Ormond School Committee Meeting is fixed for Monday evening the 2nd February at 8 D’clock. ' ' t

Another Compeer.—We learn that, an addrlifion to the racing stud already in the Bay has recently been made by the arrival of an old favorite from Napier. We shall, probably hear the particulars of him to-night.

Road Board Advertizing. — The Secretary gives notice this morning that all advertisements connected with the business of the Poverty Bay District Highway Board, up to the end of the financial year, will be inserted in the STANDARD ONLY.

Building Society.—We are glad to learn that steps are being taken with a view to forming a Building Society in this township. A preliminary private meeting of a few residents is to take place at the latter end of this week, to arrange plans to be submitted to a public meeting shortly to be called. Illustrated Herald. —The January number of this journal is to hand, after a long absence of exchanges; and we have much pleasure in congratulating the management of it on the continuance of artistic ability displayed in its pages.

“ Two Hours Genuine Fun ” are promised by Mr. Arthur Vivian and Miss Nellie Melville —who have been delighting Naper audiences for some time past —at the latter end of next week. These artistes are spoken of very favorably by the Press generally, and will arrive by the steamer due from the South on Tuesday next. Waikanae Bridge.—Mr. Skeet represented the inhabitants of Gisborne at the Road Board on Monday, with reference to obtaining a grant in aid towards building a foot-bridge over the Waikanae stream, and we believe the Board are willing to assist in this most desirable work, for the purpose of which, no more legitimate application of a small amount, out of the Provincial Government Grant in aid of “ Public Works,” could' be made. The cost is estimated at about £BO.

Strike.—A meeting of carpenters was recently held in Napier for the purpose of discussing the question of wages. Mr. Ewbanks took the chair, and apparently did all the talking. He spoke firmly and temperately in support of the motion, and in course of his remarks, said, that “it costs fully 20 per cent more to live in Napier than in Wellington or Auckland, while wages are 10s. a day in the former and 12s. a day in the latter towns.” A proposition that a notice should be given of the increased demand for 12s a day, was carried, and the meeting separated. Native Meeting. —This meeting, as announced, was held in the Court Home on Tuesday last. There was a goodly number of natives representing the Aitangi-a-mahaki tribe present. A Committee of 63 was appointed, Dr. Nesbitt being the only European on it. After the Generd Meeting, the Committee, with Dr. Nesbitt in the chair, passed the following resolution, which was unanimously carried: —“ That the undermentioned European s be respectful ly requested to submit copies of their leases or agreements to the Committee, for the purpose of enabling that body to come to some arrangement.” The Europeans alluded to are Messrs. Scott, Williams, Matheson and Harrison, Jacobs, Cuff, Read, Fraser, and Breingan. A fuller report we are obliged to hold over till Saturday.
