COLONIAL ITEMS.
(FROM THE ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN PRESS AGENCY) Auckland, January 2. The races yesterday were not equal to the expectations formed. Serious riots occurred, in consequence of the horses entered for the Railway Stakes being scratched, leaving Papapa to walk over. Inspector Broham, some of the police, and Mr. Hardington, the clerk of the course, attempted to clear the course, when the latter was dragged from his horse, and the animal rolling over him, he was trampled on by, another horseman in the crowd, and picked up insensible. His injuries are not serious. Inspector Broham was also pulled off his horse. A man has been apprehended, who is believed to be the ringleader. The Maiden Plate, £lOO, distance 11 miles, was won by Batter j Golden Crown, 2. The betting was 10 to l oti Batter. Auckland Summer Handicap,-£l5O, added to a sweepstake of £lO ; distance 2 miles— Hatred, 1; Batter, 2; Yatterina, 3. Hatred won by a length. Ladies’ Purse— Is Flying Jib, 2 ; Novel, 3. Handicap—Ben Nevis, 1; Tattler, 2. ' For the Epsom Plato, Kakapo was first. Calumny and Blaek Ragle were so close for second place, that the judge was unable to decide.
