This was a splendid race, and Yatterina won by a head only. The Consolation Handicap was carried off by Mr. Mill’s Parawhenua, with Black Eagle second. The Hack Race was won by Wizard. Wellington, December 26. The ship Duke of Edinburgh is signalled outside, with about 200 Government immigrants, and also immigrants for the Colonists’ Aid Society settlement are on board. All well. The attempt to form an opposition Gas Company has failed. The Government has taken proceedings against the natives who created the recent disturbance at Horowhenua. Lyttelton, December 26. The schooner Alert has arrived from Pelorus Sound. The mate brought the vessel in, and reports that the captain mysteriously disappeared ten miles outside the heads.
