Canterbury, November 11, 1873. The Race Meeting opened to-day, and was a marked success. The weather was dull, but fine. The attendance on the course was larger than had been seen on any first day for several years. The Governor, Lady Eergusson and suite arrived shortly after the first race. Sir Tatton won easily.

At the Agricultural Dinner 170 persons were present. The Governor, in replying to his health, expressed great satisfaction with his reception at Canterbury, and spoke highly of the Agricultural Show, which, in almost every department would do credit to any similar show in any country. He referred pleasurably to the first prize Clydesdale entire having been bred on his family estate in Scotland. He spoke of the great progress made by Canterbury and the colony, and said he would do his utmost to preserve good relations and connections with the mother country.
