OCTOBER. 29— Rangatira, s.s., Captain Lloyd, for Napier and Wellington. 30 — Effie Meikle, schooner, for Mercury Bay via the Coast, with orignal cargo. The Rangatira did not arrive until Wednesday morning last owing to the heavy Northerly weather experienced since leaving Napier. She left that jx>rt on Monday evening as usual and proceeded with fair weather until Portland Island was in the distance astern. The full force of a N.E. gale with thick weather was now experienced, against which the ship could make no headway. Captain Lloyd considered it prudent, the glass at 28 deg., 90 min., to stand out to sea during the night, and head for the land towards morning. At 6 a.m. Capt. Lloyd found himself a dozen miles to the South of young Nick’s head, and the fog so thick that the breakers on the beach could be heard before the loom of the land was seen. The ship’s head was again put to the wind, and after some hours’ fruitless expenditure of force order was given to bout ship and run for the Mahia. At midnight on Tuesday, the anchor was again weighed and this port made as above. Captain Lloyd says the old boat behaved well, but took the seas over her cheerfully, fore and aft, one of which washed the man clean away from the wheel. The heaviest seas which 'Captain Lloyd has seen for some time, were experienced during the passage.
