TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD.
Sir, —The “ opinion ” of the Highway Board, re the application of “ Daly and others,” —as published in your paper of the 11th inst.—appears to have disappointed “ Daly,” and I may add as a certainty has not only disappointed, but rather
astonished “ One of the others.” “ One of the others,” has always been under the impression that the “ work requested ’’ was just what the Board could undertake, it has also been his impression, that the Highway Board was constituted for that very purpose, and as it appears that “ One of the others ” has formed erroneous impressions of the functions of a Highway Boatd, he will feel obliged if the Editor will set him right. As things seem uncertain in this world, and men, and other things, seem to be what they are not; it is probable that the following impressions, formed by “ One of the others,” may turn out to be equally erroneous. To save time and space “ One of the others ” has tabulated the following impressions:— Ist. That nearly one-half the township would be thoroughly drained and thereby benefitted. 2nd. That the whole of the Gladstone-road, from the Brewery to Te Hapura, will have to be eventually drained, in the way, and “as requested,” by “ Daly and others.” 3rd. That the Highway Board are empowered to take an outlet drain through anybody’s land. 4th. That this drain would drain all the available funds and brains of the Highway Board. sth. That the Board can strike a special rate. 6th. That the Highway Board is afraid of the Maoris. 7th. That the Highway Board is becoming Hauhau in its politics. I am, &c., One of the Others.
