The following return of the total area of forest, open, and lake country of New Zealand, was given in the minutes of the conference of chief surveyors for each province, held this year in Wellington : — Auckland, 170,000,000 acres ; Taranaki, 2,137,000; Hawke’s Bay, 3,050,000 ; Wellington, 7,000,000 ; Nelson, 7,000,000; Marlborough, 3,000,000; Westland, 3,044,760; Canterbury, 8,690,000; Otago, 16,038,400.
