ROAD BOARD.
Monday, October 6, 1873. Present —Messrs. Povnter, King, Parsons, and Hall. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary reported that Mr. Hardy had not been able to communicate with Bishop Williams respecting the road to the Tutoko Block, but was daily expecting the Archdeacon. The Engineer was instructed to cause the buildings encroaching on Gladstone-road and Read’s Quay to be removed. The following letters were received :— From Captain Read, asking for permission to erect a swing gate at Matawhero across the road, leading from the main road opposite Hird’s Hotel to the Ferry. Resolved that permission be granted subject to clause 53 of “ The Highways Act, 1871.” The Board further decided that in all cases they would withhold permission until the following conditions were complied with, viz: That fourteen days previous to the authority being granted, a legible notice shall be posted at the spot in the following form: “Itis my intention to make application for permission to erect a swing gate across the road. Any objections to the same to be forwarded in writing to the office of the District Highway Board,” and that the person erecting the gate, undertakes to keep the gateway passable. From Sergeant Shirley : —l. In reference to the erection of a Pound within the township. Consideration postponed to next sitting day. 2. Requesting authority to obtain a supply of numbers for dog collars under “Dog Nuisance Act.” Granted. 3. Respecting “ Act for Prevention of Fires, 1866.” Authority granted to the senior officer of Police to carry out the provisions of the Act. From Mr. Bilham, requesting that a road be laid off from the Repongaere Ford to Lavenham. The Board came to the conclusion that they did not consider any immediate necessity for the road, and would postpone the consideration of the
application till that district shall be more settled. From Mr. Daly and others, requesting the Board to cut an outlet drain within the maori fence from Captain Read’s wharf to section No. 101.
