CORRESPONDENCE.

(Our columns are open for free discussion; but we do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents.]

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

Sib, —ln your issue of the 23rd inst. Mr. Jeffereyes states on oath that Davis and myself were quarrelling over cards. Now sir, this is a pure fiction of Mr. Jeffereyes, (and his being sworn might be called purjury.) For I confidently say. and prove, that I never had a cross word with Davis the whole time I was playing with him, or at any other time. I write this not only to clear myself and Davis of quarrelling, but likewise to show that, if the rest of Mr. Jeffereyes sworn statement is as devoid of truth as the part referring to my quarrelling, it should be looked into, for if a man can say what he likes when on oath it’s hardly worth while to swear him at all, or to make laws for the punishment of perjury. By inserting this you will oblige, yours, &c., The Man Bbown. Deab Sib, —Has affairs in this locality are not altogether on a peaceble footing I should like to know if the European residence are inside, or outside of the boundary, for the Government of t his country have signified their intensions, not to protect us outside I wonder if they will grant us protection inside, I should rather think the court House is built inside the boundary, if so : protection is very scarce at present and the black skins themselves must think that the Pakears law is all bosh, however I hope ere many days are over, the question will be desided, for as things stand at present, we are showing more weakness than strength, a very bad thing to do by inserting this in your valuable journal you will oblige yours T. C., Gisborne. (“T.C.” will observe that we have complied with his request. — Ed. P.B.S."]
