Wb had intended to publish our leading article this morning in the Maori language as well, for the information of our native friends ; but as the space at our disposal forbade the attempt, we trust they may become acquainted with it by some other means. Compensation Petition.—We have been requested to state that this petition has now the requisite number of signatures attached to it, and will be forwarded by the first mail to Wellington. Business engagements prevent Mr. Greene from going with it himself, as at first intended. Black Swans.—Recently we have heard that large numbers of these birds have been seen at Blenheim; last week travellers from the Coast northwards have also reported that black swans are pretty plentiful down as far as Tologa Bay. Pheasants, too, have been seen very often of late. Presentation. —On the 12th inst. the workmen engaged at Mr. King’s Saw Mills, Makauri Bush, presented Mr. Hurry with a splendid gold ring ; —also a brooch for Mrs. Hurry,—in token of his upwright and straightforward conduct between the employer and the workmen, on the transfer of the management of the Mill to Messrs. Buchanan and M‘Koy. It is gratifying to see so good a feeling between managers and those under them.—(Communicated.)
