The Queen thanks the members of both Houses for making prompt provision for the Duke of Edinburgh, and trusts that his approaching marriage with the Grand Duchess will prove a new tie between the two countries. Her Majesty also congratulates the country on the success of Sir Bartie Frere’s mission for the abolition of the slave trade, and says that a commercial treaty has been concluded with France. The Bishop of Winchester has been killed by a fall from his horse. Bishop Ely succeeds him. Seventy Danish Immigrants, bound for New Zealand, are now in hospital on board the ship Thames, at Gravesend. There are four cases of cholera amongst them, and two deaths have occurred. Dr. Featherston is attending them, and they are kept strictly isolated. The English, French, and German fleets will prevent an excess of Spanish insurgent ships. A minority of eighteen in the House of Commons opposed the allowance to the Duke of Edinburgh. Dr. Kinealy, who is defending the Tichborne claimant, described Sir Roger as being depressed in mind and an habitual imbecile, which explained the absurdity of many of the claimant’s statements, whilst his conduct throughout was inconsistent with being an impostor. The Pope received one hundred French deputies, and assured them that the Virgin would establish the Kingdom in France. The fusion between the Orleamsts and Legitimists has been accomplished. Victor Hugo is dying. The Carlists have just defeated the Republicans, and captured the Republican General and six hundred men. The intelligence was discussed in the English Cabinet. A reconstruction of the Ministry has taken place. The Earl of Ripon and Childers have retired, Mr. John Bright replacing Mr. Childers. Mr. Bruce also retired upon receiving the peerage, Mr. Lowe replacing him. Mr. Gladstone holds the Premiership and the Chancellorship of the Exchequer together. Mr. Ayrton resigns his seat in the Cabinet, and Mr. Adam is his successor. New York. Cholera is spreading in Tennessee. The Government bonded warehouse at New York has been burnt down. The Cape coast British reinforcements have arrived. Sickness and heavy rain have prevented the operations against the Ashantees from being carried out. Cholera has appeared at Berlin.
