The Napier Telegraph says:—Mr. J. Grubb was a passenger from Wellington by the s c . Rangatira on August 4; this gentleman succeeds Mr. P. Bourke as Chief Postmaster, at Napier. Mr. Grubb was chief clerk in the Post Office, Wellington, and has been ten years in the service. Congratulations have been exchange! over the great quantity of arms which the natives were returning to “ stock, ” and we are asked to accept the fact as a proof of the pacific intentions of the race—that they were not exactly beating their swords into ploughshares, but were bringing their “ swords ”to the Government under ths impression that they were doing the right thing. But the native has not exactly exchanged his regard for uiu for the sweet satisfaction of performing a duty. Nothing of the kind. The fact is that the Government are giving ten shillings for every arm returned, and all the old Besses, and rusty things of antiquity are fraught from their hiding places knd exchanged for the sum named. No one can suppose that if a native has a gun which is capable of firing at all in a straight line, he is likely to dispose of it for 10s. We confess we are totally unable to see any political object in the affair. It appears to be wholly a matter of uiu, in which the native has the best of the bargain. JFizngraawi Herald.
