ROAD BOARD.

Monday, 11th August, 1873. The Board met at 11 o’clock. Present: — Messrs. Poynter, King, Parsons, Hall, and Johnson. Minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman submitted to the Board a letter addressed to the Ratepayers. —Resolved that the letter be inserted as an advertisement in the “ Standard.” A letter was received from a number of Ratepayers requesting that the Waikanae Ford be repaired and that the road to the Waip ioa Ferry be rendered passable. The material having been already provided according to a r< cent decision, it was resolved that the work on the Waikanae Ford be carried out accordingly. As regards the Waipaoa road the Engineer was instructed to repair the bridge and its approaches, to put two box-drains where required on the road. A letter received from Ratepayers in Ormond district, requesting that the road to the Government Bush be rendered lit for traffic. The Engineer was instructed to report on it. A letter from Sergeant Shirley directing attention to the insecurity of the Dog-kennel. The Engineer was instructed to see to its repair. A letter from Mr. Eiffe requiring an account of the Gladstone Road Contract, in which he was interested. The Secretary was instructed to inform him by letter, that having failed to fulfil his contract the Board does not recognise his right to any further payments on that account. Letter from Mr. Lusk Provincial Secretary acknowledging receipt of application for loan of £2,500 and in reply, stating tnat the application would receive favorable attention should a loan available for Public Works be obtained for the Province. Letters were also received from the Superintendent’s Office in Auckland, referring to the sub-division of the district and asking the Board’s opinion thereon. Resolved that the Engineer prepare plan and specifications necessary to form the Gladstone Road throughout. Letter from Provincial Secretary stating that the charge for shipping cattle and horses at the Turanganui wharf will be increased to 2s 6d per head after the Ist September proximo. The Secretary was instructed to write to Captain Read informing him of the result. The Engineer was instructed to extend the works included in Brown’s contract on the Middle Road Mendlesham, as far as may be necessary; and to report on the works required on the Church Road, Mendlesham.

The Board finding that the Auditors had not completed the examination of the statement of receipts and expenditure resolved t hat unless they did so before the next meeting of the Board, that their Auditing fees will not be paid. Mr. Lysnar tendered his resignation of the office of Secretary, his duties ceasing on the 16th of August, which was accepted. The Board decided to combine the office of Engineer and Secretary, and offered to Mr. Skeet the salary of £4 per week to perform the duties pertaining to those offices; it being understood that the Board should be put to no extra expenses in connection with assessments or collections. A month’s notice on either side to terminate the agreement. This offer was accepted by Mr. Skeet. The date of entering upon this office the 18th of August inst. The Board decided to place at the beginning of each month the sum of £25 for current expenses the same to be accounted for at the end of the month.

The following accounts were passed :— C. Kearney for cutting drain near Oweta £5 j W. D. Lysnar, for salary to the 16th inst., £2. The Board adjourned till Monday the 25th inst.
