ROAD BOARD.
Saturday, 2nd August 1878. The Board met at 2 o’clock. Present:—Messrs. Poynter, King, Parsons, Hall, and Johnson. « Mr. Poynter was unanimously voted to the chair. The minutes of previous meeting, and of the Annual Public Meeting were read and confirmed. The Engineer informed the Board that Mr. Steele would construct one punt for £67 10s which was accepted. The Engineer reported that he had visited th* road through the Pipiwaka Bush but owing to the quantity of water was unable to inspect it.
Received Shirley’s account under Dog Nuisance Act. Amount £6 os less 12s 6d.
Messrs. Poynter anl Hall were appointed to sign cheques on account of the Board. Letters received : — From Dr. Nesbitt, R.M. informing the Board that the Rev. Mr. Root had applied to him for permission to remove some gravel from the river bed, and requesting the Board’s opinion thereon. The Engineer having reported that the removal of gravel from the bed of the river was calculated to injure the banks : the Board are of opinion that this permission should not be granted, but that the Engineer be instructed to point out places from which it may be taken,
Mr. King asked permission to lay a tramway from his Mill to the main road from Gisborne to Ormond. Granted, on condition ihai. M-. King convey goods on terms to ba approved of by the Board.
The Board was informed that an rrorhad arisen in the statement of Receipts nnu Expenditure for the year ending June 30, 1873. Enquiry was made into the matter and it was found that the error had not been discovered by the Au :itur« until after the statement had been laid before the Public Meeting ; thut although the account books were correct, there were three sums in the schedule of works, amounting to £37 9s 5d had been omitted in compiling the statement. The Secretary states that owing to the illness of one of the Auditors, the press of business fell on the morning of the Public Meeting which occasioned the error in question. The following accounts were passed : —John Hill for culvert Mill Bush road £5, J. E. Green for repairing approaches to Karawa bridge £3, W. Hume Bright-street contract complete £3J, Dick and Paterson on account of beacons and piles £25, Engineers salary £9 12s 6d, Secretary salary £5.
