ROAD BOARD.

Saturday, 19th July, 1873. The Board met at 12 o’clock. Present: —Messrs. Poynter (chairman), King, and Parsons. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr. Dalziell furnished his report for the duties cf poundkeeper. Returned the book, and was settled by paying to the Board the balance due — £3 12s. Mr. Hardy applied on behalf of Wi Peri to erect a swing gate on the Makauri Block at the end of the Toanga River. Letters received— From Mr. Winter recommending to the Board that the road just completed through the Pipiwaka Bush, should be closed to traffic for three months. The Engineer was desired to report on it. The Secretary was instructed to forward a copy of this minute to Mr. Winter. From Mr. Pritchard requesting information respecting the leasing of some land in the Township of Gia’iorne. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr. Pritchard that the Board hold no authority over the land in question. Mr. Drummcnl applied to have his bond cancelled. The bond was returned. Instructions received from the Superintendent forwarding printed copies of instructions for the treatment of persons apparently drowned. The copies were to be advantageously distributed. The Board discussed the Petition presented by the settlers on the west side of the Waipaoa river, to the Superintendent, with a,view to giving the opinion required by the Superintendent. The Board decided (Majoi Westrup dissenting) to inform his Honor that although it is desirable that the present Highway District should be subdivided, yet the proposed alteration would be unfair to the remaining portion of the District. For the reason that that portion of the proposed District, lying to the north of the Patutahi creek, depends solely on the roads that would be in the District, from which they (the Petitioners) would be separated. The following tenders were received for building two punts : — From Andrew Ross for £157 each, (enclosed £5). —Rejected. From John Rigg for £135 for two, (no enclosure). From — Dunahoo for £173 for two, (no enclosure) . —Rejected. From Frederick Steele for £l3O for two, (enclosed £5). The Engineer reported to the Board that finding the culvert leading to the Mill-bush out of order he had had it replaced as a work of emergency. Mr. Poynter applied for permission to deepen a portion of one of the road-drains opposite Mr. King’s house. —Permission granted; work to be done as directed by the Engineer. The following accounts were passed : — H. E. Webb for printing, Ac., £l6 Bs. Andrew Park, Gisborne Ferry subsidy the. for year ending December 31,1872, £5.
