ROAD BOARD.

Saturday, 12th July, 1878. The Board met at 12 o’clock. Present : —Messrs. Poynter (chairman), King, Parsons, and Westrup. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Letter received from the Superintendent, enclosing a copy of a petition from the settlers of mouth of the Waipaoa River, who wish their lands to be constituted a separate Highway District : the Superintendent wanted the opinion of the Board, as to the desirability of granting the request. Laid over till next meeting. No tenders being received from persons willing to undertake the duties of Poundkeeper. Resolved that the question be referred to the Public Meeting. The following tenders were received for fascining the approaches to the Waipaoa Ferry, none being suitable, the question was shelved : —James Taylor, for £75, rejected; Thomas Gilmore, for £6O, enclosed £5, rejected ; Makaore Kakate, for £49, rejected ; Oliver 'Goldsmith, for £45, held over. The following tenders for beacons and piles to the Turanganui River, were received : —A. Park and J. Siddons, for £65, enclosed £5, rejected ; Dick and Paterson, for £6O, enclosed £5, accepted. The following tenders were received for works on the Middle-road, Mendlesham: —M. Boland, for £24, rejected; W. C. Walsh, for £l9 10s, enclosed £5, rejected; James Brown, for £lO, enclosed £5, accepted; James Taylor, for £l5, enclosed £5, rejected. Resolved to extend the time for receiving tenders for the two punts, till Saturday next, the 19th inst. The Engineer reported that a good road might be made round Kaitaratahi Hill, but that two culverts would be required. An estimate was furnished by the Engineer for re-claiming the land up to the Gisborne wharf. Settlement was made for the Waipaoa Ferry, with Oliver Goldsmith and S. Holloway for the entire year 1872: viz., from January Ist to December 31st, 1872. The subsidy for that year being paid, £25. The Board having been informed that the flaps of the Punt were too short. Mr. Goldsmith, being present, agreed to lengthen them to six feet. The Engineer was instructed to fill up the crevices in the Waikanae crossing with a Pouriri log, let in and fastened down with iron treenails; and to repair the holes in the same crossing with stones. The following accounts were passed:—W. Hume, for repairing wharf road, £l. L. Dunne, No. 1 and 2 contracts, maintenance, £25. L. Dunne, for gravelling £l4 Bs. M. Boland, for gravelling, £7 7s. Captain Read, £39 6s 2d. Mr. Cuff, £6 6s. J. Drummond, balance of salary, £5. Langford, for message, Bs.
