AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL RACES.
ENTRIES:— Messrs. Witty-kur, and Tussel’s r.h., Johnny, aged. Mr. Tom Enderson’s 1.b.h., J.S., aged. Mr. Joe Maze d.b.h., Provincial Bay. First on the list comes “ Johnny,” a horse wellknown to many, as having been beaten three out five races. He stands about 14 hands high, rather a bony animal with an ugly head and face, not at all suited to a racehorse; he has a wicked eye, is very vicious in harness, and has, on several occasions, severely bitten his owners, and was very nearly kicking our Superintendent at the last races. He is by “ Printers Devil ’’ out of “ Nell Flarretty,” own brother to “ Turncoat,” and his owners have declared him to win. He has lately changed stables, and it is rumoured be will be ridden by Hoppy Drake of Queen-street, his old jockey, Paddy Bonfield, declining the mount, fearing a fall; very wise of him too, for the old horse is sure to come to grief in the last mile. “J.S.” comes next on the list, but in the race he will be first or I shall be much mistaken, being the beet horse of the three; and though he is unknown upon the turf he will astonish some of the knowing ones. Why his owner has not brought him out before is a mystery to all, for he has long been looked upon as the best horse in the province, and if he does not break down in training he will make the running too hot for poor, “ Johnny.” He is being trained by a wellknown Turfite who has backed him heavily, and I myself intend to bet my bottom dollar that he wins. He is by “ John O’Groat,” out of “ Kaller Herrin,” brother to “ Tom O’Shanter,” and will be ridden by Napier’s famous jockey, Watts. “ Provincial Bay ” is, I believe, a young horse, overmatched, therefore let his owners beware; and if they are wise they will scratch him, and save their money, for he is a shy horse, in fact he will shy at any thing except red tape and lawyers. He is by “ Emigrant Agent,” out of “ Trickery,” brother to “ Railway Pest;” is somewhat vicious, and I shall be much surprised if he starts for this race, therefore if the sporting fraternity of this province wisji to save their dollars now and hereafter, Let them back “ J.S.” through thick and thin, For he’s the horse that’s sure to win. T.C., Gisborne.
