In his opening address to the Provincial Council, Mr. Macandrew said that proposals would be submitted for the construction of light-railways as feeders to the main lines, for faciliating settlement. He showed the necessity for reserving land for settlement on deferred payments contiguous to lines of railway. He hoped members would bury the hatchet, and suggested the discontinuance of the practice of replying to the Superintendent’s address. WELLINGTON. July 2. The ball to the Governor was largely attended. The Governor opened the ball with the Mayoress. The Superintendent proposed the Governor’s health. The Governor replied, thanking the Wellington public for their handsome reception of him, and apologised for the absence of Lady Fergusson, through indisposition. GRAHAMSTOWN. July 2. Caledonians are rising, and Tookey’s are coming into notice. Instructions are to be given to Mr. Whitaker for drafting Municipal bills for the Thames, AUCKLAND. July 2. The Collector of Customs has awarded 6d per day afloat as compensation to the crew of the Highton Castle for the unwholesome food supplied on the passage. TAURANGA. July 2. An agitation is commenced for the establishment of a local bank. Captain Tonka declines to stand for the Provincial Council. Bodell quotes fat cattle at 26s per lOOlbs.; store cattle, £5 to £l7 10s; cows, £4 to £9; hacks, £5 to £9; potatoes, £5.
