ROAD BOARD.
Saturday, 28th June, 1873. The Board met at 11 o’clock. Present: —Messrs. Poynter (chairman), King, Parsons, Johnson, and Westrup. The minutes of previous mating were read and confirmed. The Engineer reported that the bonds were signed for Kilcolly’s contract, for the outlet drain for £BO ; and for Smith and Wilson’s contract of £24 for the culvert, Ormond-road.
In consideration of Captain Read having erected a stock-yard for shipping cattle at the Gisborne wharf, the charge for shipping cattle be increased from Is to 2s 6d, these to be forwarded to the Superintendent; also sailing directions for Turanga river for publication in the Gazette. The Engineer was instructed to call for tenders for such beacons and piles as are requisite for the mouth of the Turanga river. The Engineer reported that he had laid down buoys and anchors, sent from Auckland, at the entrance of the Turanga river; and that the Waikanae ford was in course of repair. On receipt of a complaint from Mr. Holdsmith the Secretary was instructed to inform him by letter that Militia men would not be dbnsidered on duty, on parade days, after sunset. It was decided by the Board that the Gisborne wharf should be closed at 7 o’clock in the summer, and 5 o’clock in the winter.
The manager of the Union Bank will effect exchanges for the Board on Auckland at par. The following accounts were passed -Captain Read, for freight and lighterage, £6 12s. H. Steel, for sundry works, £3 16s 6d. H. Carr, for clearing 127 chains, Ormond-road, £22 4s 6d.
Resident Magistrate’s Court, £2 12s 6d. Mr. Skeet, for expenses incurred in laying down anchors and buoys, £4 12s 6d, the amount to be charged to the Provincial Government. Resolved to write a letter to the Provincial Government applying for £2,500, out of the loan being contracted by them in aid of the following works: — . For a bridge across the Waipoa River, £l,OOO. For metalling roads in district, £l,OOO. For bridge over Arai Stream, £3OO In aid of new roads £2OO. Resolved to call for fresh tenders for forming approaches to Waipaoa Ferry. The Engineer was inst rqMfcil to prepare specification, and call for tendero for works necessary on the middle-road, Mendlesham. Proposed by Major Westrup that a ditch of the probable cost of £5 be dug to drain a swamp on the road from the Waipaoa Ferry to the Karawa Bridge, so as to render it passable. Orrfed. An amendment by Mr. Parsons that the settlers in the vicinity should hpar half the cost, was lost. The Engineer was instructed to carry out the work.
Resolved that the Annual Public Meeting shall be advertized for, and held in the Court-house at Gisborne, on Monday, 21st July next, st 11 o'clo-k a.m. The Engineer having laid upon the table some specimens of good metal which he stated could be obtained at a reasonable cost, he was instructed to call for tenders for two punts. The following accounts for salaries were passed: —Engineer, £l2; Secretary £7. The Board adjourned.
