_ May K Hone te One has returned froth Kuiti. He reports that, the roeetihg is th4t king Tawhiao refuses to give up the murderers of Sullivan. Tawhiao sent a letter to them, asking them to come to Kuiti. They were last seen carrying the head and heart of. SuJliyta, to be. presented to Manuhiri or Princess Sophia. Later rumors are current that anoUier meeting is to be held to-morrow, to discuss again the giving the murderers up. Mr Thomas Russell, a very old settler, is dead. A meeting of settlers has been held at Cambridge, and resolutions passed to the effect that nothing will satisfy the settlers except bringing Sullivan’s murderers to justice. The settlers will give the Government time to mature their plans, but in the event of their failing to capture the murderers, a meeting of settlers will be held to take action in the matter. Resolutions were passed urging the establishment of blockhouses on the Waikato frontier. Mr Mackay was present at the meeting, and stated that the Government had asked Tawhiao whether he would deliver the murderers up, or allow Europeans to go through the Country to' capture them, but that no reply had been received. The meeting also passed a resolution thanking the Waihuto Timet and the Herald, but condemning the Crott't account of the murder.

May 6. The latest reports from Waikato state that Mr. Mackay arrived at Te Kuiti last night, and passed Wahanui at Wira, who asked him to stay there ; but he pushed on and joined Rewi, Tawhiao is at Hauturu.

The messenger who went with a letter from Tawhiao to Mr. Mackay reported that Sullivan’s murderers number nineteen.

Tuhere te Wiri and the Ngatimaniopoto tribe are -very angry about the murder. They are assembling at Tehera, one of their principal settlements, to consider the state of affairs. They will not take part in any hostilities unless attacked. May 7.

Intelligence was received yesterday to the effect that Purukutu. with about 60 followers, was established at a place called Ngahokowliitu, on the Maungatautari ranges. It is said that if attacked or pursued he will be supported by “ the other side,” including, of course the Ngatiraukawa Haubaus.

Mr. Mackay pushed on from Alexandra without interruption, and arrived at Te Kuiti oh Monday night, accompanied by Hone te One, Warana, and Eruiti Onoriyi. They were well received, and food was given to them, a tent being erected for Mr. Mackay. About half-past six o’clock yesterday morning Mr. Mackay was awoke by some one entering his tent, and on looking up, he saw a Maori before him armed with a taiaha, or long club. The man sliifted the position of the weapon, so as to grasp it with both hands, evidently with intent to strike. Mr. Mackay rose into a sitting position, arid seized the weapon. A struggle ensued, Mr. Mackay being at a disadvantage not being able to get upon his feet, and his assailant strove, because of his advantage, to wound Mr. Mackay with the sharpened end of the taiaha. Mr. Mackay then cried out, whereupon several natives rushed into the tent and dragged the assailant away, who was fouud to be a Hauhau named Ruru. The natives at the settlement are very indignant on account of the outrage. Rewi arrived soon after, and took Mr. Mackay away with him, remarking that “if he wanted to do evil he would do it in a large way, and not in that sneaking manner.” Mr. Mackay replied that he regarded the assault as the act of one man, and not of the cluefs. He added that, without furthpr noticing the matter, he should proceed on the business of his mission. " " iin-H-i.

It is much to be regretted that during ithe struggle with Ruru Mr. Mackay received a slight wound on the temple. He is now under the protection of Rewi and the other leading chiefs. No further violence need be feared; ;(J . Later. Further news from Waikato re the attack op Mr. Mackay, says that Rewi behaved nobly. The assailant, Te Ngatu, it is said, was insti- 1 gated to make the attack by Muku, the ringleader of Todd’s murderers. Arrived —Parsee, ship, from London, with 75 immigrants, all well.

i : : i May 8. Greenback, the clerk who accidentally shot liimself, is dead. Mr. Mackay has not seen Tawhiao, is at Kuiti. Mr. Mackey is at Te Wira, wmither Rewi, with 60 followers; escorted him.

Manuhiri has promised to send an answer to the demand for the murderers. - Mr. Mackey was asked to bate. Kuiti,, but refused, until he got a decided answer. By the advice of Rewi, however he went .toTe Wira where he awaits Tawhiao’s reply. J ' * A case of refusing payment of the .education rate was heard in the Police Court to-day; Judgment was reserved. It was argued that Provincial Coumcils have no power to pass Acts imposing taxes on the people. tauranga ’" • ■' , May 3. There are many surmueaas to-the cause of the murder at Waikato, the prevailing opinion being > that the King’s party are.innocent r The meeting now sitting at Tokangamntu is strictly secret. The chief Tapaea has gone to it. May 5. Peop’e were aroused this morning by hearing volleys of guns for half-an-hour. The firing was more severe and constant than that which took place at the Gate Pa. - On its ceasing, an awful yelling, by a hundred voices, declared that the Whareroa building wm,ready for the reception of visitors. The building has been erected for the purpose ef holding meetings, political and hon-political.
