“ We shall sell to no man justice or right: We shall deny to no man justice or right: We shall defer to no man justice or right.”
Although the mails that have reached us from North and South during the last few days, bring tidings of interest from all parts of the globe, there is none to which we turn with greater solicitude than that which compasses the recently-reported death of a fellow creature by the hand of a Maori assassin in the Waikato district. We have published all, and the latest, of what is known respecting this melancholy affair, in order that our readers may draw conclusions after their own judgment. This much, however, is certain: it is idle to speculate, as to the mystery which lieth concealed under the dark cloud of this people’s treachery. A further mischief, for which we are not prepared, will surely fan the spark into a flame, if such gatherings as we find have been held at the Thames, decide by a caucus of the inhabitants “to interfere” with the ligitimatefunctions of the Government; while, on the other hand, it ill assorts with either our sense of present justice, or hope of future safety, to pass the matter idly by, and let it go forth to the world that we are unable to bring even murderers to account. It is to be regretted that nothing more definite is known by the Government as to the cause of this unhappy affairbut in the meantime it is our duty as citizens, who have not only to watch over, but to protect our own interests, to bring an enlightened, judgment and assistance to bear upon the matter; and that while we ardently strive for peace, we must not shrink • from a performance of the stern duty which the deaths of murdered settlers imperatively calls upon us to perform. .. 7 z >
