LOSS OF THE ATLANTIC WITH 560 PASSENGERS.

The steamship Atlantic has been stranded off Halifax, and 560 persons have been drowned. Already this year there have been many severe storms in the Atlantic Ocean, and consequent disasters. In another paragraph will be found an account of several wrecks that occurred in February last And we are now called upon to record the loss of another noble steamship, with a long passenger list. One can imagine how, in the foggy weather, ship, passengers, and crew, without perhaps a moment’s warning, were buried in the deep. We are told that, of the 560 persons drowned, 350 were women and children. The details of the wreck, are harrowing in the extreme, and the news has caused a great sensation. The wreck is reported to have taken place on March 28. It seems that the Atlantic was bound 'from Liverpool to New York, and she was crowded with passengers. To foggy weather is attributed the cause of the sad disaster. The Atlantic was owned by the White Star line, and was of 3,500 tons burden. Speaking of this vessel, the New York Herald in a recent issue says, “ She is one of the largest and most complete in her fittings afloat, and- into her construction have been introduced, for the first time, many of the improvements that have so conduced to make aq ocean voyage, in the absence of terrific storms,- one of comfort and pleasure. The vessel may be truly termed a floating palace.” Weekly News.
