TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD.

Sir, —It is certain that.geographically Poverty Bay ought not to have been included in the Province of Auckland. It is also very certain that owing to political jealousies between the Provinces of Auckland and Hawke’s Bay we have become .a football as it were, although I must say I believe fhat the Provincitfl Government of Hawke’s Bay is interested in our progress and that the General Government desires to make good, so far as it can, the losses sustained by -our settlers in 1865 and 8.868. Thirdly, it is veiy certain that if we progress under existing circumstances it must he owing to the capabilities of the district alone. Thia being admitted it behoves as-at once to take steps to obtain an Act of the General Assembly oonstituting our district a. county, or shire ; the working expenses I think would not, for the present, greatly exceed the expenses of our present Road Board, and the advantages would be great. During the last two years men of capital and influence have visited us and the capabilities of the Poverty Bay District are now known North and South, so we should not have the difficulties to contend with On obscure locality would have; added to which the extent of available country is now ascertained to be much greater than it was at first thought to be. Let us ventilate the subject before the next sitting of the General Assembly.—l am, Ac., Trogrbss.
