The following hues are written in “ Ranolf and Amohia” to the memory of Captain St. George, stepson of the author: — (Be thus much said for kinship’s sake) Who sleeps the sleep no more to wake On earth mid loveliest scenes afar, Where Tongariro’s snows disgorge Their flames by blue Te Aim’s lake— Young kindly chivalrous St. George ! Whose honor-fired aspiring brain, Before the instant blighting ball, Flashed into darkness without pain, As in his wonted “dashing style” (His comrades said) his men he led Against the palisadoed wall Of that prophet cannibal, Whose torturing tastes —impostures vile— Our rulers’ sympathies beguile. The New Zealand Herald is informed by the police that counterfeit sovereigns are in circulation, and that people in taking or exchanging this coin should be more than ordinarily careful in inspecting the quality of it.
