J A new steamer is on the stocks at the North Shore, being built for the New Zealand Ship-: ping Company. She is to bo called the “ Alanawatu.” A steamer was seen and heard in the Bay on' Wednesday night, about 11 o’clock ; but as no •communication was opened with her, she de'•parted. It is supposed to be the Comerang, and that Captain Chrisp was in a hurry to make Napier for the morning tide. Before Sir George Bowen left New Zealand, he presented Captain Fairchild with a very handsome timepiece, accompanied with the following flattering letter:— My dear Captain Fairchild —I request that you will kindly accept the accompanying dock, as a small token of the deep sense which Lady 'Bowen and I entertain of your constant courtesy and attention to us during our several trips in the ships commanded by you. With our united best wishes for the happiness and prosperity •of yourself, Mrs. Fairchild, and your family, I remain, Yours most sincerely, G. W. Bowen. Fairchild. T.S.—You must come to see us whenever you may visit Melbourne.
