COMPENSATION! TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. Sir, —Herewith I beg to hand a let ter from the Honourable the Colonial Secretary’s, office which I take to be intended as a final answer to our Petition for Compensation, in wliich it is stated that the House of RepresentaLvjs, in 1867, decided against granting Compensation. Now sir, this reply can only be taken ns an evasion of the question, as the most of the settlers were quite aware of such decision, and in the face of it, proceeded to Petition tho Government, treating ours as an exceptional case. I repeat that this is a miserable attempt to evade the question; and Ido not hesitate to state that ours is a just and right demand, and my belief that there is no body of Legislators calling themselves Englishmen,, who would allow this “great wrong” to be brought before the eyes of the world, when properly brought before them, which it will be next Session of the House.—l have, &c., W. S. Greene. " Colonial Secretary’s Office, “ Wellington, 14th, February, 1873. “ Sir,—Adverting to my letter No. 50, of the 3rd instant, on the subject of the Petition from sufferers, through the late native disturbances on the East Coast, for Compensation for losses sustained by them, I have now the honor to inform you that the House of Representation deliberately decided in 1867, against granting Compensation in such cases. “ I have the honor to be, Sir, “ Your most obedient servant. “G. S. Cooper, “ Under Secretary.”
