Over 40,000 persons assembled at the racecourse to witness the running for the Melbourne Cup. The spectacle was a magnificent one. 22 horses started. The race meeting was generally well attended, and a complete gala week took place with races, ball, opening of the Theatre Royal, and other opening amusements. The city was crowded with strangers. Riots have occurred at Charters Towers. The mob attacked a butcher’s shop. The owner fired upon them, shooting three men. He has been arrested. The riots have now subsided. The Assembly has passed a resolution authorising the Government to join with othdr colonies in arrangements for mail service. At a sale of wool, fleece fetched 2ad. per lb. ; much of it bought in. McLiver and crew, charged with murders on board the ‘ Nukulau,’ have been discharged, as no interpreter could be obtained.
