AUSTRALIAN TELEGRAMS.
Over 40,000 persons assembled at the racecourse to witness the running for the Melbourne Cup. The spectacle was a magnificent one. 22 horses started. Mr. Tait’s Quack, first ; Ace, second; and Dagworth third. Time 3min. 39sec. The race meeting was generally well attended, and a complete gala week took place with races, ball, opening of the Theatre Royal, and other opening amusements. The city was crowded with strangers. The Exhibition was opened on Wednesday with great ceremony by the Governor. Judge Barry rea l the address in reply, to the Governor. A large display of local products and man u inc - turns is made. The German Princes have proceeded to India. Mr. Webb has advised, by telegragh, the change in the designation of the line to “ the Californian, New Zealand, and Australian Mail Service.” The Sydney Parliament is opened, and numerous measures are announced, including an alteration in the constitution of the Council. In the Governor’s speech the paragraph referring to the mail service condemns the precipitate action of Victoria in accepting the terms offered by the Imperial Government withodt consulting the other colonies. The Government has telegraphed a protest to the Secretary of State. The Divorce Bill has passed through Committee in the Assembly. The Permissive Bill has been read a first time. Riots have occurred at Charters Towers. The mob attacked a butcher’s shop. The owner fired upon them, shooting three men. He has been arrested. The riots have now subsided. The Assembly has passed a resolution authorising the Government to join with othdr colonies in arrangements for mail service. At a sale of wool, fleece fetched 2ad. per lb. ; much of it bought in. McLiver and crew, charged with murders on board the ‘ Nukulau,’ have been discharged, as no interpreter could be obtained.
