Bates to October 29. Mr. TCnatchbull-Hugesson delivered a locture at Deal yesterday, on the colonies and their Government by the mother country. The Duke of Argyll, Secretary of State for’ India, has signified his intention of heartily cooperating with Lord Granville, Foreign Secretary in the endeavours that are being made for the suppression of the Eastern slave trade. The newspapers are discussing the letters of Mr. Reed, the late Chief Constructor of the Navy, and comparing the standstill policy of the Admirality with the rapid advance that is being made by Continental Powers. It is stated that the San Juan question has been decided in favor of America, and the award declares that the claims of America are in accordance with the Treaty of 1846. The Californian harvest this year promises to be the largest ever known. Money is less active. The Agricultural Bureau report for October shews that the wheat crops are five per cent, increase over the crops of 1871, and the quality has also improved. Money still scarce. Victorian sixes, of January and July, 115|. Victorian fives, 1061. South Australian sixes. 109}. Bank of Australasia shares are quoted at 54}. Wallaroo copper, £B6 per ton. Other produce unchanged. Arrival: Lincolnshire, from Melbourne. An extraordinary horse epidemic has broken out in America. The Newcastle collieries have reduced the price of coal. The Staffordshire colliery engineers have commenced to strike. The weather is exceedingly rainy, and disastrous inundations have taken place in the midland counties of England, and in France and Italy. Admiral Randolph is to succeed Commodore Stirling on the Australian station. Large contracts have been made for Australian meats, deliverable in 1873.
A woman named Bowers, who was being examined in a case heard at the civil sittings of the Supreme Court in Hobart Town, on the 24th ult., made a touching appeal to the domestic sympathies of the Solicitor-General. “ Speak up, my good woman,” “ I’m not a strong woman ; youknow what it is to have twins, and I’ve had twins myself.” This reply completely upset the gravity of bench, counsel, jury, and spectators, and the Solicitor-General seemed to enjoy it as much as anyone. The deocicocichicocandard is a new fancy dance, recently introduced at the French ball in New York. It is calculated for about 3 o’clock in the morning, when male dancers have no difficulty of pronunciation, and the other fellows are too nearly exhausted to listen attentively.
