In the case of a Volunteer, summoned by the captain of the Taieri rifles, for detention of his accoutrements, after being dismissed for non-attendance, the magistrate decided in favor of the defendant, the striking off the roll not being a proper dismissal according to the Act.

The survey of 75,000 acres in the native block has been completed, and will come before the Native Lands Court in November. If the Ngatipu tribe is declared the owner the country will be opened for gold mining. It is known to be auriferous.
The Diocesan Synod has resolved to petition the Provincial Council to obtain permission to impart religious instruction at the Government schools after ordinary hours; also, for the better regulation of the liquor traffic and the suppression of drunkenness.
