The Canterbury Press, an out-and-out sup--1 porter of Mr. Stafford, says the new Treasurer (Mr. Gillies) must have been selected for the office because he knows nothing, or .next to nothing of financeIt is reported (says the Auckland corresspon- , dent of the Lyttelton Times), with many circum- • stances of probability, tlie Hon. H. R. Russell, member of the Legislative Council, is to be appointed agent for the whole of the East . Coast. Bearing in mind that this gentleman has been officially charged with abetting certain : frauds, and moreover, that he is exceedingly [unpopular everywhere along the East Coast and IHawke’s Bay, it may seem strange if such an [appointment is made, but there are “ wheels ![within wheels,” and who can say how far Mr. ■ Stafford is prepared to advance a political adherent ?

Ormond and M‘Lean) said to the [storekeepers, ‘Be strong to give spirits and .[goods to the Maoris, so that they may get into [[debt and be compelled to sell their lands.” [The Attorney-General and Mr. Allan, we learn, .[are retained by the prosecutors.
