ROAD BOARD MEETINGS.

We purpose giving a digest of the; proceedings of the Boad Board, from: time to time, so that our readers may have an opportunity of carefully study-' ing the measures their elected are framing in their behalf. | We begin with the meeting of the ( 22nd of August, when Messrs. Poynter| and Westrup were chosen a deputation; to wait on the Provincial Secretary, to| ascertain hie views on various questions affecting the welfare of the district. Mr. Lusk informed the deputation that the General Government grant would probably be about £BOO, and the Provincial Government grant about *£loo, for public works in this district, for the, year 1872-3. He suggested that the| Board should form scales of charges for Ferries and Wharf dues, which would be proclaimed, and placed under local control; and that representation be made, relative to the modus operandi. of laying off roads through Native landsj ceded to the Government. He promised; to recommend the appointment of a sheep and scab Inspector; and that the, Government paddock be set apart as ai quarantine ground for sheep and cattle.j The next land sale will possibly take place in about two months time, at Gisborne, as before ; after which the sections unsold will remain open for selection. The attention of the Provincial Government would be directed towards sending a fair proportion of the immigrants expected soon to arrive from England; also to modifications of the Fencing Act at the next meeting of the Council. Mr. Lusk seemed to be fully alive to the necessity that exists for an enlargement of the representative element in the Council; and promised to support a Bill which would give a member to this district The Hoad Board have accepted Mr. Dalziell’s tender for the management of the public Pound to June 30,1873. The Provincial Government have been ad vised of the Proclamation necessary to bring the same into effect-; and the out lying settlers will soon have the benefit of protection from trespass, m As many forms. FRIDAY 30th AUGUST.

The Board met at 11 o’clock. Present. —The Chairman aqd all the members. The minutes of last meeting were read. Letters. —The following letters were read: —One from Mr. Bold, requesting particulars of the AVaerenga-a-hika contracts ; and one from the owners of sections on Grey and other streets in Gisborne, asking to have the roads, leading to their properties, improved. The Engineer was instructed to accept, (in connection with Mr. King,) any reasonable tender for the execution of the necessary work. Dog Collars. —The Secretary was instructed to write to the Provincial Government, for a supply of 200 Dog collars.

An application was received from Mr. Skillicorn, to be appointed to the management of the Pound. The question of enlarging the Pound district, resulted in a decision that the boundaries be advised to the Superintendent, for proclamation, with a request that the Pound district, as at present proclaimed, be abolished; and the Secretary was instructed to call for tenders from persons willing to undertake the management of the Pound for the year ending the 30th of June, 1873. Pound Bye-law.—lt was resolved that the following be a bye-law, “ That provision be made, in the erection of the Pound, for keeping all Entire animals separate.” Scales of fees, leviable at each of the Ferries in tie Bead Board district, were drawn up, and passed; and the Secretary instructed to forward same to the Provincial Government, for proclamation. Mr Woodbine Johnson’s motion, “That £lOO be spent on the road beyond Ormond,” was decided to stand over for the present. Site fob Boad Boabd Offices. —It • was resolved that the Chairman should suggest to the Provincial Government,

the advisability of setting apart a section in the Town of Gisborne, for the purposes of Road Board accommodation.

A sum of £l5, was voted for making a cutting near Mr. Cowan’s at Ormond. , Williams and Hadliek’s Petition. t —The Engineer was instructed to report to the Board, on the prayer of petitioners.

,[ Opal Road :— It was decided Ithat an early opportunity should be /accepted, in which to communicate with ,'Henare Kokopanga, relative to the t opening of this road. , The Board adjourned to Saturday the 1 14th September.
