The Patea County Press, AND Manutahi-Waitotara District Guardian. “Be Just and Fear Not.” MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1887. MAYORAL HONORS.
Tin: Hut has gone forth, nnd it is now ’• cert;:in ihct j l is "Worship tho Mayor is not :■> neve ;i walk over at tho comiiig; (■[; i i>r iilliitg tho mvio cham ■ Til’s is: .s i;. should have I men in the; past Wo have no ish to say a eiiig'lo word a gain.st tie- prescntll ay or ; he lias nobly done his duty during a' long term of office, and lias ever been : found ut ids post when duty called, and . ovr-r w'di'ier to devoto his time and; energies to iho welfai-o of the Borough. ; {•'till we do not like uncontented elec | liu;;:.. to continue too long “ familiarity ■ breeds contempt” and too long an i occupation of tin? civic chair, is apt to | bring a contempt for tho wishes or j suggestions of Councillors and Bur— I gesses, and. furtlienuore, is liable to • induce the feeling that the position is I u personnl right, that no one else has any business to (pieslion or contest, a feeling - eminently adverse to tho freedom of citizenship, and one which should, whenever possible, bo combatted in the most direct maimer possible ; which can only ho done by contested elections. The have no intention to go closely into this matter at present,' as the object and views of the aspirant for civic honors have not been uni do public, and cannot, therefore, be commented on It is to be hoped, however, that in fairness, alike, to the present Mayor and Burge-ses, some opportunity, either by public meeting or publishing an address —preference being given to tho former—will be ■dferded Burgesses of obtaining some insight iutothereasonsfor, ami prospective advantages obtainable by, a change in tho present Borough administration. The time is short (Wednesday next being tho day for nomination, and the thirtieth instant, the polli g day), so tho new candidate should not bo slow in making his views known. This is the m ac necessary, as it is freely slated iii.it tholirstobjcctin the change is to secure expensive Borough Chambers, in lieu of the present offices; and It is only fair that ratepayers should know how far this is true before pledging themselves to vote for any 1 candidate. We have good authority for sajing that there is no truth in he assertion, but ratepayers, no doubt, would prefer satisfying themselves on ■ this subject, as well as many others; and, as a public meeting is the most direct method of imparting views, it would appear to be advisable to follow such a plan. It is not, of coarse, necessary for tho present Mayor to trouble about such a matter, as ho has been living and acting his views for over five years, there is, therefore, neither doubt nor risk about them ; but Burgesses can scarcely be expected to elect a candidate to such an iionorm 1.1.■ position without first being made acquainted with some outline of his intended action, and wherein it will differ from, and bo an improvement on, j that of the ruling Mayor.
