TENNIS.
As Captain Edwin was graciously pleased to award some fine weather on Saturday, the Tennis club’s grass courts were formally opened. The great improvements made in the grounds during the winter, prove conclusively, that the gentlemen votaries of this favourite game have been, by no means, idle during “ the recess.” The awkward slope at the northern side of the grounds, which was found so inconvenient last season, has all been levelled and turfed, while the southern boundary of the courts have been considerably extended, and quite a pleasant promenade formed. The surrounding grounds have also bora planted and cared for, giving a most pleasant result. The formal opening of the courts for the season, was made the occasion of a very pleasant gathering, and quite a number of country members attended, over fifty being present. The opening game on the higher court was played by Miss Parsons and Mr Webster against Mrs H. E. P. Adams and Mr Kempthorne, the latter winning by 4to 2, The opening game on the lower court was played by Miss E. Turner and Mr Jollie against Miss Medley and Mr Eaddeley, the latter winning by oto 4. Game followed game in rapid succession, and without intermission, until the seductive fragrance of an “ afternoon tea,” allured the tennis devotees from the courts to a most enjoyable interval of rest and refreshment, when the work of the fair members of the_ club was most fully appreciated, after which an adjournment to thecourtswasmude, and play continued until the lengthening rays of the declining sun, warned the pleasure seekers that prudence required more substantial protection from the falling dew and increasing cold, than could bo obtained on the grounds, and members and visitors wended their several ways homeward, after spending a most enjoyable afternoon. Great credit is duo to the Committee of Management, Messrs Baddoloy, Christie, Kempthorne, Pex-kins and Webster, for the capital arrangements made for the day’s amusement, and there is no doubt that, under their able management, the Club will pz'ospcr and grow in general favour.
