The Patea County Press, AND Manutahi-Waitotara District Guardian. “Be Just and Fear Not.” THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1887. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The adjourned meeting of the Borough Council takes nlace this evening, A meeting of the dchool Committee will take place" in the rchoolhouso to-morrow, evening ot half-past seven, when a full attendance is requested. The Waverlcy is expected in port on .Saturday next, and is to leave for Westport the same evening, at six o’clock. The Chronicle understands that Mr Coventry (formerly of this town), has resigned his appointment as master of the WaitoUrr school. Chicken pox is prevalent in the bush districts north of Normanby, and in cod cquence the Cardiff school has had to be ejosed for a fortnight. The teacher, Mr D. .3. Williams, is himself far from well, and has come to spend his enforced holiday in the family circle. We heard to-day of a rather good joke re the Municipal deputation that waited on the Premier, asking that city councillors should be called Aldermen, and the mayors, “Lord” Mayors. A message was sent to the Premier fiom I’atea, asking that Patea Councillors should be styled Aldermen, and the designation of the Mayor be “ Lord Albert.” Th s should bo rather a happy douceur to the Major, as it not only embraces the present Mayor, but himself also, both second names being identical, and it would thus serve to immortalise tho boundary alteration of the figment c eetorate —rumour ! Wo learn that two gentlemen in this city, Messrs Tindall and Bond, employes of Messrs Thompson, Shannon, and Co., have met with a wounderful piece ol good luck in connection with the Melbourne Cup. The gentlemen in question were fortunate enough to draw Hlvermiue in Adam’s consultation (which is held in Melbourne) on the race, ihe prizes of which are £SOOO, £2OOO, and £IOOO. In order to come out with something in hand they laid oil £3OOO to £2OO against the horse. As will bo seen from oar cable message, Silverraine ran second, and consequently the fortunate paid win £2200. As things have turned out, they have won £2.;0 more than they would have done if ihcirownhor.se had won tho race. Such good fortune is rarely experienced.—N.Z. limes.

We regret that in our extended report of the School examination one or two errors wore allowed to appear, which, though given correctly in the school scheduled result, might possibly tend to give a wrong impression. Not ib'y the figures in “ Standard iJ, Teacher Miss Williams.” The passage read “ examined ‘lß,’passed 23,” it should have been, examined *2B' passed 23. A very different resuh. and one decidedly complimentary to Miss Williams, when compared with funner experiences in this standard, prior to Miss Williams taking charge. In Standard 111, the numbers examined twenty, parsed sixteen, were correct, but the name of Kate Graham was omitted from the list of those passed, only fifteen been given. Our attention has been called to tho met unit in tho scheduled results we omitted to give tho total average percentage of pas cs. This appears to be correct, and may be < onsidered, and probably was, an oversight, but when an exact hundred were examined eighty passed and twenty failed it would appear to be something voiy like tautology to state again that eighty per cent passed. Wo ao so now, however, to save error or trouble on the part of any interested.
