SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
- - The Patea School Cotnmiteo held it** usual meeting on Friday, when there were present:—Messrs Aitchison (chairman), Brown, B Idwin, Hammond, Hamerton, Potts and Thomsen. Minutes of former meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence read, From Mrs Usaher, asking for leave for Miss Ussher, who was at present unable to attend to her duties through sickness, from ; Education Board, staling that the Board had no teacher at liberty at present to relievo Miss Ussher, and suggesting that the head master should detail two senior pupils as monitors until Miss Ussher was sufficiently well to resume her duties. With reference to Mrs Ussher’s letter, die Chairman said the necessary leave had been granted; as Miss Ussher had suffered severe relapse it was improbable that lie would be fit for teaching for some irr?e jef f and tJae matter had tljerefoze been left with the head master to deal with. The Committee appointed to got up an entertainment for a prize fund, reported Unit teachers did not wish to have th cnildren’s t ; rno taken up just now in preparing an entertainment, as it would militate against their chances of sac-ess at the annual examination no.v close at hand. The Committae recognised the justice of the request and as the children’s portion of an entertainment was generally the principal attraction it had been decided to abandon the attempt until after the full committee had met to consider the matter. After some discussion it was decided to endeavour to collect the necessary funds, and Ifevds Hammond and Thomson were requested to undertake the duty. The Sub-committee reported that the lecture niven by Mr Hugo, had realised £3 14s Gd, of which £1 2s 6d had been paid for the Hall, leaving a net balance to the Committee of £2 12s. Accounts were then read and passed for payment, as soon as the capitation grant is to hand. The Chairman in referring to Mr Hugo’s lecture, spoke eulogistically of the manner in which the Committee had been served by the now defunct Patea Mail, as all the Committee’s advertising and printing had been done gratuitously, and be thought some recognition was due in that connection. It was resolved on the motion of Mr W. Brown, “ That a cordial vote of thanks be recorded to the Proprietor of the late Patea Mail, for his great kindness in giving advertisements and notifications in connection with Committee matters free of all cost.” Carried unanimously. The Committee ibnn .adjourned.
