HECTOR ON GAS. Wellington, Oct. 22. —The following is the report on natural gas on Mr Crawford’s pro perty:—The gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons. The chief pact is very light carburetted hydrogen, or marsh gas, It contains less than 1-1000 part of its volume of carbonic acid gas, and no air. It is a feeble illuminant, but will answer for beating or driving gas engines very well. It is different from most of the gas that escapes from petroleum springe, and gas escapes along the east coast, of which more than twenty are known to be between East Cape and Castlepoint. It probably has its origin in the decomposition of deeply buried swampy matter.-jAS. Hector. ROUGH WEATHER, The north-west gala of the last two days was one of the most violent for many years, both in harbour and on the other Bide of the ranges in Wairarapa. Scarcely any damage is reported in town, but the train was stuck up when up proaching the Rimutaka incline by the fury of the wind, and had to be divided and taken on in sections.
