NEW STEAM LINE.

A few months ago (writes the correspondent of a contemporary). Sir Francis Bell, when on a visit to Paris, sonnded both J\l. Cochery (the French Postmaster-General) and M. Faure (the Under-Secretary for the Colonies) with reference to the prospect of the Government granting a subsidy to a company which it was thought might be formed in the north of France to run a line of steamers to New Zealand, New Caledonia (and possiblj Tahiti), and Australia. M. Cochery, who has a great belief in the future of the Pacific Colonies, w«s decidedly favourable to the idea. It has now been announced* that a French company, subsidised by the FrenchGovermuent, has established a regular line of steamers between An-

twerp and Australia and New Caledonia. The steamers will call at Havre and Bordeaux. Apparently, New Z *alanel will not at first directly benefit by ilio new service. The Mcssageries boats have not been able to command wool freights from Australia, but the new line certainly will, for most of thgreaß woollen ’manufactories of France arc in the north, and would he dhectly served hy the wool being brought to Antwerp and Havre. At present manufacturers find it cheaper to buy in London than to bring Australian wool from Marseilles.
