GENERAL NEWS.
Captain James Duncan, of the schooner Tanrangn, informs the New Zealand Herald that there is reason to believe that the representatives of New Zealand at the Conference have been put in possession of the views of Malieloa and the chiefs of Samoa on the subject of annexation to New Zealand. Captain Duncan was in the habit of corresponding with Mr Mac nndrew, who forwarded his communications to Major Atkinson. Malieloa is desirous that Samoa shall be annexed to New Zealand. Shareholders in the New Zealand Shipping Company, and the public of Wellington, says the correspondent of the Lyttelton Times, arc intensely interested in watching the new steam service. Everyone asks his neighbour, “ Will it pay ?” All men wonder at the great magician, Mr Coster, and look forward to new marvels. No port in the Colony will benefit so much as Wellington from these direct steamers, for they will utterly crush ont the import trade direct to Nelson, Taranaki, and Hawke’s Bay.
