FRACAS AT KAKARAMEA.

Considerable excitement was caused at the Kakaramea sports yesterday afternoon, by what bid fair to have become a serious affray between some of the Maoris and Europeans on the ground. Almost every one present had a different version of the affair; but so far a? we can gather it appears that the facts are these : A Native from the Bay of Islands district, north of Auckland,

was on the ground, and intended taking part in the Wrestling contest. Before this came on, however, he was engage in a friendly wrestle with a European. Throwing; his antagonist, the Native raised his hand as if to strikh him, bnt this it seems was not his intention. Misconstruing the gesture, the Maori was dragged away by some Europeans, and somewhat hustled. Another man now offered to wrestle the Maori, bnt this the Native refused, evidently thinking he had not had fair play. Hootings were then ennsed by some of the persons present, am! the Native losing his temper struck, at one of his assailants. Another Maori coming forward to mediate received small Thanks, fur his pains, and was roughly handled. Other Maoris now came to the seem*, and a general free fight ensued for a few minutes, between the contending parties, which culminated in the wrath of tho antagonists suddenly subsiding. For a considerable time, however, tho anger of the Bay of Islands Native was not appeased, ho evidently “ nursing his wrath to keep it warm ;” bnt beyond uttering throats of rather a bloodthirsty description, lie caused no further disturbance.
